Man barred from Queeens internet cafe where he fatally stabbed teen in self-defense

Once again a free man — after being cleared of manslaughter — Paul Kim went back to the unlikeliest of places on Saturday, the scene of the crime.

Kim headed right back to the K&D Internet Cafe on Union St. in Flushing, store workers told the Daily News.

The 51-year-old was living at the 24-hour cafe before his deadly clash with 19-year-old Yangpu Fan and three other teens about 9:30 p.m. on April 26.

Kim was sitting at the terminal he always rented — with his belongings discreetly placed along with him — when several teenagers tried to bully him into moving so they could sit together and play the online game “League of Legends.”

The homeless man fought off the three young men, who returned a short time later with Fan as backup.
As the fight ignited again, Kim jammed a knife into Fan’s chest, leaving the teen with a fatal injury, police said.

Cops charged Kim with manslaughter and weapons possession, but a grand jury refused to indict him on Thursday after reviewing a cafe surveillance video that showed Kim was merely defending himself.

“The video clearly shows that the young man who lost his life approached Mr. Kim and attacked him without any provocation,” his lawyer Claudia Romano said. “Thank God there was video.

Kim was released from jail on Friday. His lawyers said he was held for 30 extra hours because a Correction Department fax machine was out of toner.

But when he returned to the K&D cafe the next day, staff didn’t let him in, claiming he violated store rules by bringing a weapon into the establishment — the very kitchen knife he used to defend himself against the four teens who attacked him without provocation.

“He wanted to use the computer,” a cafe clerk, who wished not to be named, said Saturday. “I had to ask him to leave. We have a no-weapons rule.”

Kim left the cafe without protest and sought out another place to stay as his attorneys try to find him a more permanent home. “We’re really worried about the next two nights,” Romano said.

Kim never intended to use the knife as a weapon, Romano said.

“He had all of his belongings with him,” she said. “From his underwear to his kitchen utensils.”

Even after the deadly fight, Kim stayed at the cafe and helped workers clean up, Romano said.

“Everyone we spoke to during our investigation said he was a kind, gentle man,” she said. “He has a lot of people, his lawyers, witnesses and cafe workers pulling for him.”
